Well as u pointet out, it's only hatet bc of the styling. The genes and feeling are still bmw !! Esspecially the e46 era(2000s) was a good era for bmw drivers. And The compact doesn't has the rearaxle roblem as the others e46s (coupe,convertibles, Sedan etc..) It looks clean, so have fun!!
Yes, the 316i is a good choice for a first car. Good on gas, it doesn’t have the fan clutch like the inline 6s do, and other than that, they’re pretty fun cars. Check for rust around the jack points, check the coolant (just in case). Other than that, you’re good to go. 8.
